Geoffrey Bartlett Scultpures in a landscape 2011
Silver mountain and White mountain are the most recent works in an ongoing study on the theme, Sculptures in a landscape.
This interest began with a series of etchings developed while I was at Columbia University on a scholarship from 1983 to 1985. I employed this print-making technique to build images of impossibly large sculptures in a landscape. These sculptures could span mountain ranges, fly over valleys and bridge river courses.
Image-making in a 2-dimensional medium allowed me to explore ideas free from the constraint of gravity. The present works are 3-dimensional representations of imaginary sculptures in a landscape.
