In her latest exhibition Perpetua, Emma Van Leest explores her intricate paper cutting technique on an larger scale. Van Leest’s works draw from both eastern and western cultural traditions. Following her honours year at RMIT, Van Leest travelled to Indonesia to study Balinese and Javansese Folk art and shadow puppetry. She later visited China on an Australian Council Emerging Artist’s Travel Grant to study traditional paper cutting. The subjects of her works are drawn from sources as diverse as Hindu mythology and English folklore. Van Leest has held solo exhibitions in Melbourne and Sydney and group exhibitions in Sydney, Melbourne, brisbane, Gold Coast, Hobart and Darwin. Her work is held in private collections in Australia, United States, Indonesia and New Zealand.
